About Belmont

Belmont History

Belmont receives its name from the Belmont Mansion. Belmont was once the estate of Judge Richard Peters who was a Revolutionary War figure. The mansion is still standing in Belmont today. It was built in the 18th century and is now a museum holding artifacts of the Revolutionary War and Philadelphia’s beginnings as well as foundings of the entire nation. With the building of the Philadelphia railroad came a boom in industry and population in the Belmont area.

As more and more people settled into the area many schools were established. The area has a long-standing commitment to education. It is also one of the hotspots of the Civil Rights Era in the city. Belmont hosted many rallies and served as a base for community activism.

Don’t let the location just a bit removed from Center Philadelphia fool you. This quaint area of West Philadelphia packs endless interesting things to do and get involved in.

Arts and Culture: Belmont has one of the strongest arts scenes in the city. It is home to the Belmont Mansion Art Galleries with some of the most rich historic pieces from local artists as well as contemporary gems. There are many public murals throughout Blemont, you can find several murals adorning brick walls and concrete facades that tell stories of what makes Belmont special. If performing arts is more your style check out all of the great productions at the Belmont Theater. Or come out and enjoy it all at Art in the Park one of the most popular neighborhood festivals.

Food: Some consider Belmont to be a haven for foodies. There is a diverse and tasty collection of Philadelphia’s best local restaurants in Belmont. Some favorite local eateries include Mama’s Southern BBQ, Patty’s Pie House, Belmont Bistro, and Spice of Life.

Groceries: Belmont has one of the most amazing markets. The Green Market is a place to find locally sourced fresh produce. It is also a fun place to sharpen your cooking skills with their weekly cooking demonstrations.

Outdoor Spaces: There are many amazing outdoor spaces in and around Belmont. The Belmont Plateau is popular for a picnic with the city skyline in the background. Fairmount Park probably the most popular in the area is on the south border it is home to several trails, the Carousel House, and the Mann Center for Performing Arts. Take a walk around the lake winding through lush groves of native plants at the Concourse Lake Native Plant Park.

Transportation in Belmont

Belmont offers great commuting with public transportation to the rest of the city. There are several bus lines that run through Belmont and the neighborhood is in very close proximity to the Bala Cynwyd train station. Getting wherever you need to go beyond Belmont is pretty easy.

Belmont Schools

Students in Belmont attend public schools under the supervision of the Philadelphia School District. the specific schools that serve Belmont include William B. Mann Elementary School, which is actually under the supervision of Mastery Charter Schools and Overbrook High School.

Some students attend private schools and specialty schools in and close to the neighborhood. The most popular of which include Friends’ Central School and Belmont Charter School.
