The Philadelphia Zoo is Celebrating 150 Years

There are so many cool and interesting facts about the city of Philadelphia. One of them includes that Philadelphia is home to America’s first zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo is the first ever American zoo and this year it is celebrating 150 years.

The Zoo’s Opening Day

The Philadelphia Zoo opened to the public on July 1, 1974. The gates opened to more than 3,000 first-time guests. On opening day guests were greeted by a celebratory brass band just inside the gates as they strolled through a Victorian garden and into the zoo exhibits. There were nearly 600 animals that called the zoo home when it opened.

Planned 150 Year Anniversary Celebrations

The Zoo is hosting several celebratory events to thank the community for taking part in the success of the zoo for the last century and a half. There will be ticket and membership deals, giveaways, contests, and much more.

The President and CEO of the Zoo Jo-Elle Mogerman shared this about the 150th anniversary of the zoo with a local news outlet:

Philadelphia Zoo has welcomed nearly 100 million guests since the Zoo first opened its gates 150 years ago, connecting generations of families to the wonders of wildlife, and we cannot wait to celebrate this major milestone with the community that made us,” says President & CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman in an official press release. “As we mark this moment, we also celebrate 50 years of continuous accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, demonstrating our commitment to excellence and the highest standards in animal care and welfare
